Last summer, my friend Maureen told us about a hike her friend had done in Spain, called the Cami de Ronda. where we interested?  Of course we are! So that Sunday afternoon I start doing some research, create a trip in Triphub and add some hikes and hotels to the trip board. We talk about it more during some of our weekly hikes. In November we decide on dates, and I start mapping out the routes and hotels along the way. A year after our first conversation, we are about to embark on hiking de Cami de Ronda: St Pere de Pescador to Castello D’Empuries.  Day 5, August 25, 2025.  8 miles, 50 feet elevation.

We decide we do not want to skip breakfast today. We have a shorter hike, and the breakfast buffet is too good to pass. Our taxi arrives at 8.30. We don’t want to backtrack to L’Escala, where the hike ended yesterday, but instead we have the taxi drop us in St Pere de Pescador, the next town over.

St Pere de Pescador  – La Gola del Fluvia

The trail from St Pere de Pescador starts along the river. The reeds along the trail are so tall and thick, that it feels like we are walking through a jungle. At times the path is a wooden walkway. It is very beautiful and peaceful. We continue and loop around a campsite, before entering the beach of La Gola del Fluvia.

Aiguamolls de L’Emporda

From the beach we decide take a short cut through the campsite. The security guard stops us and asks where we are going. We must look suspicious with our back packs. We show him our trail map, and he reluctantly lets us go. He follows us, though, making sure these 3 vagabonds are not taking advantage of the bathrooms, the showers and the pool of the campsite. The trail next goes through a nature park. We see white horses and flamingoes. It is a beautiful walk.

Apple picking

After we leave the nature park, we are back on country roads with more apple orchards. Where we couldn’t convince Liane 2 days ago to steal an apple, today she decides it’s ok. No apple tastes better than a stolen one fresh from the tress. We decide that it is ok, we are thieves, but only little thieves. But more on that later.

Castello D’Empuries

We arrive at our Hotel Emporium just after noon. I am very excited as the hotel has a Michelin star restaurant and I am looking forward to having dinner here. Unfortunately, the owner tells us, that today, only her and her husband are working so the restaurant is closed.

We check in, shower and are ready for lunch. The ratings for Al Noor Kebab restaurant are really high. And the ratings are justified. I have one of the best chicken shawarmas I have had in years.

After a well-deserved nap, we go out and explore the town, before having a wonderful dinner at restaurant El Portal de la Gallarda, that sits right at a section of the old city wall. More good food and wine and our bellies and hearts are full.

Tips

Most hotels don’t serve breakfast till 8 or 9. If you want to make an early start to beat the heat, make sure you stock up on food and water. Most restaurants don’t open till 1PM for lunch so plan the hike and lunch with that in mind.  If you don’t want to carry all your luggage, Taxi en Roses has a great luggage service. You can book all segments online, where they verify your hotel is on their list. If you want to have dinner in the Michelin Star restaurant in Hotel Emporium, make sure you check what days the restaurant is open.
